Marin County based painter and printmaker, Phil Marshall, works primarily on paper and canvas with a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, masking tape and grease pencils. While the bulk of the work can be described as abstract, he often combines representational elements such as common studio tools, to explore the pathways between the genres of abstraction, still life and landscape.

“Word works”, typically a stream of consciousness writing, have been an integral component of his process. Messages are often day to day personal musings, usually layered, and the results are frequently obscured in deference to the overall visual impact rather than a literary intent.

The traditional landscapes on canvas are a reflection of Marshall’s deep love of the Northwoods in northern Wisconsin and Michigan, where he has spent many summers of his life.
