Philip W. Marshall is a Northern California artist, working primarily on paper with oil paint and china markers . Marshall began working with this process and these materials while a student at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1970's. Although his work over the years includes pieces on canvas and and different methods of printmaking, the overwhelming majority of his focus has been the works on coated stock paper. The works are linear, literal, and layered with multiple experiences. Each painting consists of several painting layers revealed through "tape windows". The finished pieces are a considered by Marshall to be documents of pages from his personal journal... a journal of words and images.
