Phil Marshall: Artist in the Bay Area

Marin County painter and printmaker, Phil Marshall, works primarily on paper and canvas with a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, masking tape and grease pencils. While the bulk of the work can be described as abstract, he often combines representational elements with abstract elements to explore the pathways between the two genres. Writing is prominent in many of the images. These “word works” are typically stream of consciousness musings and have become an integral component of his process. Often the layered aspects of the paintings will obscure much of the writing, ” The visual impact of the piece is far more important than any literary intent”, says Marshall. “But it is really common for people to ask me what the writing actual says or means.”

Phil Marshall has dedicated over fifty years to his craft of tape mask reveal method of picture making, creating a large body of work that reflects his passion for art. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area since his college days at the Academy of Art College and The San Francisco Art Institute, his pieces capture the essence of contemporary themes while showcasing his unique style. His art has been featured in numerous exhibitions, and is in many private and public collections.
